The Plains - The Spice Island Safari - 15 Days

Kendwa Beach - Zanzibar IslandOffering a wonderful mixture of wildlife and cultural exploration, through northern Tanzania and the great Selous, this safari provides a great variation in environments and wildlife and ends with three nights to completely relax on a white beach on Zanzibar Island.

Day 01 : Arusha

Arrive in Nairobi or Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to the Mountain Village Lodge on the shores of Lake Duluti.

Arusha Serena Mountain LodgeWreathed in multi-colored tresses of tumbling bougainvillea, Mountain Village is hidden in the depths of a beautiful coffee plantation just outside the hustle and bustle of Arusha, Tanzania premier 'Safari Town. Strung like a necklace around the shores of an idyllic wooded lake, a haven of calm and serenity is found here.

Set in the flowered gardens of a coffee planters farm house and surrounded by rolling groves of wax-green coffee bushes, Mountain Village offers wide timbered decks with panoramic views over Lake Duluti and a selection of ethnically-styled 'Rondaval village-cluster rooms.

Each of these is neatly thatched with 'Makuti stems, lavishly embellished with 'Makonde carvings and comfortably furnished in traditional safari style.

Day 02 : Lake Manyara

Afternoon pick up from Arusha Town Center and join seat in vehicle safari. You depart Arusha and pass through the Maasai Steppe filled with many picturesque African villages as well as maize, coffee and banana plantations. At the town of Makayuni you turn Northwest and continue the journey up through a scenic escarpment that brings you to your lodge, perched on the edge of the Rift Valley with stunning views over the distant Lake Manyara.

Lake Manyara Serena LodgeIt would be difficult to find a more dramatic setting than the Lake Manyara Serena Lodge.

Situated at the edge of an escarpment, this deluxe lodge overlooks both the Great Rift Valley, which formed millions of years ago, and the beautiful soda lake of Manyara with is lavish supply of bird life.

The birds themselves have provided the inspiration for the lodge's architecture. Graceful, curving and free flowing, it is built in the local circular style and exudes an atmosphere of peacefulness where man and nature co-exist. Sumptuous menus, buffets and barbecues are served to guests alongside authentic African dishes.

Day 03 : Serengeti National Park

Spend the morning exploring Lake Manyara National Park. Return midday to the lodge for lunch and then depart past Ngorongoro Crater and stop at Olduvai Gorge for a short excursion around the museum. You then continue into the Serengeti National Park with some game viewing en route arriving at your lodge as the sun begins to set.

The lodge is located in the Nyarboro Hills in the south west of the Serengeti National Park and is the only tourism development in this section of the Park. Year round water and the acacia woodland in this area create an ideal environment for the wide variety of wildlife seen in the immediate vicinity of the lodge.

The lodge has 79 suites, each enjoying wall-to- wall carpeting, a private lounge with a mini bar, a bedroom with two queen size beds and ample room for a third, an en-suite bathroom with shaver sockets and a hair dryer, and a private verandah which offers stunning views over the plains.

Day 04 : Serengeti National Park

Morning and afternoon game drives in famous Serengeti National Park.

Day 05 : Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you depart for Ngorongoro viewing game across the vast Serengeti plains, stopping off at Olduvai Gorge en route. The Gorge is about 50km long and in some places around 90m deep and is found between the Crater and the Serengeti.

Dr Louis Leakey and his wife, found humanoid remains of Zinjanthropus, later renamed Australapithicus Boisei, an early form of man, in 1959. You will have time to walk through the simple small museum at the gorge, where you can view copy displays of some of the finds as well as pictures of what life was like for the gorges earliest inhabitants. After a picnic lunch you continue to your lodge, set high on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater.

Located on the eastern rim of the crater, the lodge is the only tourist accommodation here. It therefore offers guests unique and spectacular views down into the crater floor and of the sunsets over the western horizon. Another major advantage of this location, is that guests can be in the crater within five minutes of leaving the lodge.

The 92 rooms are all very spacious, comfortable and set below the main lodge, so views of the forest and crater are fantastic. It's a well managed lodge with friendly staff and excellent cuisine.

Day 06 : Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, you will descend through the early morning mists and 2,000 feet into the crater. Ngorongoro Crater is the World of largest intact volcanic caldera and is also one of the World of seven natural wonders.

Due to its size and diversity, the crater floor is comprised of several distinct areas, ranging from forest, swamps, lakes and springs, to open grassland and some sandy dunes. It Is an awesome wildlife experience. You return to the lodge for lunch followed by an afternoon excursion of a Masaai Village and come back to the lodge in the late afternoon.

Day 7 : Tarangire

After breakfast you depart Ngorongoro and drive to Mto Wa Mbu Village arriving in time for an excursion of the local village. Lunch is provided by a Serena Naturalist followed by a cultural experience, feeling the heartbeat of an authentic African village with every step you take.

A leisurely stroll with a village guide will take you through local homes, farmlands, resident bars, a kindergarten and a church. After the walk we gather at a private, local banana-leaf bar, for a one in a million African fruit tasting. A wide variety of local fruits will be presented to you to taste and appreciate. Following the excursion you continue to Tarangire National Park with a game drive en route to your lodge located deep within the park.

Tarangire is recognized as one of the best parks on the northern circuit for elephant viewing during the dry season and Tarangire Sopa is ideally placed to experience this. The lodge welcomes guests to its vast marble-floored reception area with cold flannels and iced juice. In the pretty gardens a large circular pool with a central island, a pool bar and elegant wooden loungers demonstrates the lodge's commitment to comfort.

Delicious barbecue lunches are often served here. A broad veranda wraps itself around the lodge and gives prime viewing for the waterhole below, which is filled during the dry season and becomes a magnet to wildlife. The rooms at the lodge are simple, comfortable and spacious and arranged in groups of four, in African-style buildings. Large sliding doors open to a private balcony.

Day 08 : Selous Game Reserve

Depart after breakfast and head northeast to Arusha. The journey will pass through the Maasai Steppe filled with many picturesque African villages as well as maize, coffee and banana plantations. After lunch in Arusha, you will be transferred to the airport for the midday flight to the Selous. Upon arrival, you will be met by a guide and transferred to the camp to freshen up. The rest of the afternoon will be spent on a game activity within the reserve.

Situated in the heart of the Selous overlooking the river, the lodge offers twenty makuti covered tents that are all simple but very comfortable. The food is international and extremely good, and overall, the lodge aims to offer guests an intimate relationship with the surrounding bush

Here, experienced guides specialize in drives in open vehicles, walking safaris and explorations by boat along the rivers banks.

Day 9 - 10 : Selous Game Reserve

Morning and afternoon game activities. Activities in the Selous are flexible: choose from game drives in open vehicles, tracking animals on game walks, and safaris by boat.

Day 11 : Zanzibar

After breakfast depart on your last game drive, walking safari or boat trip. Following lunch you will be transferred to the airstrip to connect with the flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to the Tembo Hotel, decorated in traditional Zanzibari style and looks out over the beautiful Indian Ocean.

Tembo House Hotel is surrounded by similar historic buildings, on the waterfront of Zanzibar Town. It is decorated in traditional Zanzibari style and furnished with lovely antiques. The lounge faces the Indian Ocean, where visitors can watch a continuous stream of trading dhows glide into port.

The high ceilings and heavily carved furniture reflect the various cultural influences on Zanzibar. The food and service are both excellent.

Day 12 : Zanzibar

Morning transfer to Mapenzi Beach Club, where you will spend the next three nights on a white sandy beach with every sort of activity to partake in. Mapenzi has a reputation for good food, spacious rooms and a vibrant island atmosphere.

Set on the East Coast of Zanzibar, about 28 miles from the airport, Mapenzi blends into the natural environment of a long white beach and tropical gardens filled with palms and colorful bougainvillea.

Its spacious and comfortable bungalows are charmingly furnished in traditional East African style with all modern conveniences. The service is good, food is plentiful and there are many activities to enjoy.

Day 13 - 14 : Zanzibar

Day 15 : Depart

Spend the day at leisure before being transferred to the Zanzibar airport to connect with your departure or onward arrangements.

Please Note:
All private charter flights are subject to weight limits that can not be exceeded for safety reasons. If these weight limits are exceeded then the travelers will be held responsible for the extra costs incurred to upgrade the charter flight.

Sometimes these flights cannot be upgraded due to all charter planes being booked - this could result in a delay in travel time and pose problems for the travelers. Your luggage weight should not exceed 33 lbs. per traveler. Please advise us on the weight for your travel.

Most charter flights are booked on single engine aircraft. In the event of bad weather prevailing, it may be necessary to upgrade to a twin engine plane which is approved for instrument flight conditions. If this occurs, the extra cost of the twin engine plane will be your responsibility.
